Our Mission for ABKC Pitbulls
The mission of the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC) regarding American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT) is multifaceted, focusing on preserving the breed’s integrity, promoting responsible ownership, and fostering a community of enthusiasts who value the breed’s unique characteristics. Below are the key components of this mission:
Preservation of Breed Integrity
The ABKC is dedicated to maintaining the American Pit Bull Terrier’s breed type true to its athletic roots. This involves ensuring that any deviations that impair the dog’s ability to perform its traditional work or affect its health and welfare are considered faults. Characteristics indicating impurity or crossing with other breeds are not tolerated. The APBT must possess functional capabilities such as holding, wrestling, and breathing easily while performing tasks.
Promotion of Responsible Ownership
The ABKC emphasizes the importance of responsible ownership, which includes proper socialization and obedience training due to the breed’s potential for dog aggression. Owners are encouraged to socialize their dogs carefully and train them in obedience to ensure they are well-behaved family companions. The ABKC also highlights that aggressive behavior towards humans is highly uncharacteristic and undesirable in APBTs.
Encouragement of Junior Handlers
The ABKC has established a Junior Showmanship Program aimed at educating young handlers in dog showing, basic dog anatomy, responsible ownership, and good breeding practices.
